As you could
easily tell by looking at other books I’ve reviewed, I rarely read non-fiction
for fun. I am, however, a fan of The Daily Show. I was, of course, saddened when I heard about Jon Stewart's departure, but having Trevor Noah as his replacement does not disappoint. I figured since I enjoy his other activities so much, I might as well give his book a try. It’s a funny book, which shouldn’t be at all surprising considering
the author. If you’ve seen Noah
on “The Daily Show” or doing standup, you will already be familiar with the
kind of narrative you can expect in this book.
This book is about Noah growing up mixed in South Africa during and after apartheid. Born a Crime
is written as a series of essays on different topics, not in chronological
order. It addresses issues from racism to religion, all about growing up in
South Africa.
It was a nice
read for the summer, and if you have the time, I recommend picking it up. In
general, I don’t bother with autobiographies, but I am glad I read this one.
Trevor Noah is
a South African comedian and host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.”
