“If it were
only the other way! If it were I who was to be always young, and the picture
that was to grow old! For that—for that—I would give everything! Yes, there is
nothing in the whole world I would not give! I would give my soul for that!”
I read Dorian Gray
through Project Gutenberg, and again, I advise you check it out. If you haven’t
seen my previous post involving this project or do not know about it, Project
Gutenberg offers free ebooks that you can download and read at your leisure.
Complexities are involved with copyright term expiration and public domain, but
it is legal access.
Whenever I
read a classic like this, I feel as though there is little to say, unless I’m
pushing against the current of popular opinion. Thousands of other reviews will
already go over and over and over every part of this story. Though I am no
great literary critic, I can say that I found this work enjoyable and advise
you to pick it up if you have the time. It is, after all, free through Project
Gutenberg, so why not expand your library?
“There were
moments when he looked on evil simply as a mode through which he could realize
his conception of beautiful.”
I always find
Oscar Wilde’s works interesting since reading The Importance of Being Earnest in high school. The fact that it
took me this long to pick up Dorian Gray is almost baffling.
“The truth is
rarely pure and never simple.” –Oscar Wilde
